Introduction

Pernelius Valerian was a fledgling sorcerer with untapped potential, who rose to prominence after being one of the most powerful young sorcerers to ever live in Vanda's history. He relished his newfound fame, prominence, and respect- but when his mother died of sudden illness, he became a shell of his former self. Not wanting others to see him crumbling, Pern crafted a hardened persona more suited for the throne and the cutthroat world that sought to eject him from it, and shielded his true self in favor of posing as a wealthy, royal socialite.

Tasked with caring for an entire kingdom and his siblings while battling his overwhelming grief, Pern gradually became emotionally distant from his trauma. Everything changed when he crossed paths with Mavis, and their Divine Connection revealed his Empyrean status. It all made sense - and Pern finally had someone who could understand him on a deeper level.

Abilities and Skills

Silver Spoon • As Sorcerer King of Vanda, Pern is at the top of the ladder, with many people loyal to him as Sorcerer King. A firm but just ruler despite his hardened persona, he's never strayed into the dark side of leadership and always kept rulings fair. His people see him as an effective ruler, and a reclusive one.

Natural Magic • Pern is a Sorcerer, a magic user born with the inherent ability to harness magic without a large amount of study or effort. His powers are quite great, as he earned his position as Sorcer King. He won in a friendly duel against his younger sister, Anathema, and as a result was able to take the throne.

Empyrean Advantage • Pern's status as an Empyrean makes him naturally more powerful, including his abilities in magic and sorcery. He can learn spells much more easily than others of his kind, and is more naturally attuned to the arcane.

Monster, Not Alien • Pern possesses more monstrous traits than alien, making him and his species more distinct from other extraterrestrials. Sharp teeth, claws, increased stamina, and enhanced senses are only a few benefits that monsters possess that some aliens do not.

Design Notes


  • ✨ Pern's outfit was inspired by various 80s/90s anime villains, and Deedlit from Record of Lodoss War; specifically her shoulders and cape. While Deedlit isn't a villain, Pern's silhouette was intended to be dramatic and reminiscent by 90s anime villains.
  • ✨ Out of the Valerian family, Pern is the only one with blonde hair. It was meant to be an accent color and offset the designs of his siblings; as Sorcer King, he was meant to stand out and be slightly more imposing.
  • ✨ Pern rarely ever has his hair fully untied or down, but when he does, it is very long, reaching past his backside.

Mavis DeLuna

Spouse, Divine Consort

When Pern met Mavis for the first time, the two of them experienced Divine Connection: Two Empyreans seeing each other at their truest in a different plane of existence. Mavis saw the hurt and pain that Pern was hiding, and offered him their shoulder to lean on. The two Empyreans talked and became acquainted over time, and Pern fell in love with Mavis as a result. When he abdicated from his throne, he married Mavis, choosing to become their Monarch Consort.

Dunerigus "Dune" Valerian

Younger Brother

Dune and Pern were always close. Born a Wizard and not a Sorcerer, a rare but frowned upon circumstance in Vanda, Dune learned magic with the help of his older brother. The two of them grew closer in the process. When their mother passed, Dune disappeared, running from his feelings and leaving Pern worried for his well-being. Pern tracked down Dune's energy trail, determined to find his brother and bring him home. He eventually found Dune in the Moon Palace.

Cosmo DeLuna

Brother-in-Law, Rival

Cosmo did not like Pern at first, warning him to stay away from his sibling or suffer consequences. Pern made a snarky quip that Mavis had chosen him, and they were stuck with Cosmo - beginning their rivalry that started serious at first, but became more of a playful endeavor later on. Once Cosmo saw how Pern respected Mavis and how the two genuinely loved each other, he reconciled with Pern and the two settled their differences.

Anathema "Ana" Valerian

Younger Sister

Anathema was popular on Vanda; her charisma and extensive knowledge on transmutation earned her notoriety when she began helping people change their bodies to feel more comfortable with themselves. When their mother died, Ana began veering into unethical territory, desperate to harness power and eternal life and bring their mother back. Pern disapproved of these methods, and it created tension between them as a result; Pern only wants what's best for her.
